When Chelsea and Davis chose to celebrate their wedding at the Tonnara di Scopello, they weren’t just selecting a venue: they were embracing a dream.
“I cried the first time I visited.” That’s how Chelsea describes her first glimpse of Tonnara di Scopello and, as a wedding photographer in Sicily, I totally get it! This ancient tuna fishery on Sicily’s rugged coast is the kind of Scopello wedding venue that stops you in your tracks. Between the turquoise waters and those iconic limestone sea stacks, it’s pure destination wedding Italy magic.

Tonnara di Scopello: Sicily’s Most Iconic Wedding Venue
The Tonnara di Scopello is more than just a stunning seaside location—it’s a piece of Sicilian history nestled on the northwest coast of the island, just a short drive from Palermo. Once an ancient tuna fishery, the Tonnara has been transformed into a world-renowned wedding venue, famous for its raw beauty, turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs. It’s no surprise that couples from all over the globe choose the Tonnara for their destination wedding in Sicily.
Surrounded by rustic stone buildings, ancient watchtowers and a shimmering Mediterranean backdrop, the Tonnara di Scopello offers the perfect setting for unforgettable wedding photography.
Their Love Story (It’s Actually Perfect)
Chelsea and Davis met through coworkers in Augusta, Georgia, back in 2018. They bonded over golf, but romance took its sweet time. When Davis finally asked Chelsea to dinner in 2022, she rescheduled twice because of a trip to Italy (talk about foreshadowing their wedding in Sicily!). But he waited and, from their first official date, they were done for.
Here’s the really sweet part: they chose their wedding date to match the anniversary of their first kiss. Their first dance? “Invisible String” by Taylor Swift. Because even when they weren’t together, something kept pulling them back to each other.
Chelsea grew up sailing, so water was non-negotiable for her intimate wedding in Sicily. But beyond this stunning Sicily wedding venue, they wanted something where their favorite people could actually spend time together, not just show up for one night.
“We really wanted small, intimate and beautiful,” Chelsea says. This destination wedding Italy approach let them create something truly personal while giving guests an unforgettable Sicilian experience.
Chelsea’s Look: Effortlessly Stunning
She chose an Ines Di Santo A-line gown with a sweetheart neckline and the prettiest illusion back detail. Her jewelry told stories – diamond earrings and a pearl necklace were gifts from Davis, but the real showstopper was her “something old and blue”: her grandmother’s gold ring with blue lapis.
Smart Sicily destination wedding tip? She wore comfortable Dolce Vita shoes. Because dancing all night on ancient stone terraces requires both style and sense.
An Emotional First Look in Scopello
Before the ceremony, Chelsea and Davis shared an incredibly emotional first look in a truly breathtaking location: the cave just in front of the iconic rock formation at Tonnara di Scopello. With the sound of waves crashing below and the dramatic Sicilian coastline surrounding them, it was an intimate and powerful moment. Just the two of them, holding space for the emotions of the day, far from the bustle of preparations—this quiet pause became one of the most meaningful memories of their wedding story
The Ceremony: A Spiral of Intimacy
Rather than the traditional aisle, the ceremony unfolded in a spiral layout, gently curving toward the couple at the center, like a soft embrace.
Designed by the talented Laura Comparetto of Loviuevents, the guests seating took the spiral, a symbolic and visual metaphor for the couple’s journey—an unfolding path that led to their union at the center. With the sound of the waves in the background and a sea breeze in the air, the entire space felt alive.
The floral design by Frascati Fiori echoed the shapes of the sea and stone: soft pastel blooms spilled like foam across the sand-colored floor, meeting vibrant yellow accents and textural greens. Surrounded by the sound of the waves and the distant outline of the Faraglioni, it was a ceremony suspended between earth and sea.
Dining by the Water with Floating Light
As night fell, guests were welcomed to a seaside dinner that could have been pulled from a dream. Rather than a straight imperial table, its graceful serpentine shape added movement and intimacy to the scene. The long table—dressed in cool-toned linens and punctuated with floral arrangements and citrus slices—reflected the natural beauty of Sicily while maintaining an effortlessly elegant style.
Overhead, vintage lamp shades floated like glowing lanterns, casting a golden light on the guests as the sun slipped behind the rocks. The light, the laughter, the scent of saltwater and lemon : it was pure Mediterranean magic. Every element of the design was intentional and evocative.
As a wedding photographer in Sicily couples trust to capture nuance and truth, I found in every frame a sense of place, of intention, of love rooted in detail.
Espresso Martini & Dancing in the cave
After the cake was cut, a surprise awaited: a tower of espresso martini (instead of a traditional champagne tower. Because when you’re having a wedding in Sicily, you embrace the coffee culture, right?) poured with smiles and laughter under the night sky. It was bold, elegant and effortlessly cool, just like my beloved couple!
But the true crescendo came in the iconic cave, where music echoed off ancient stone and dancing continued late into the night. With every step, every toast, every laugh, the Tonnara itself seemed to join the celebration.
Why Tonnara di Scopello Captures the Soul
There is something sacred about this place. It’s not just photogenic—it’s atmospheric. As a wedding photographer in Sicily, I seek moments that go beyond the visible and at the Tonnara di Scopello, those moments are everywhere: in the cracks of the stone, in the light on the water, in the stories whispered by the wind. The guests spend days together, not just hours. They explore Scopello village, swam in crystal-clear waters and experience real Sicilian warmth. That’s what happens when you choose a destination wedding Italy experience done right.
Chelsea and Davis didn’t just get married here: they became part of its story.
